Craftsmanship used: Blue and white porcelain

Blue and white porcelain is a non-material cultural heritage craft in China, renowned for its blue-patterned designs. It involves using cobalt blue glaze on white porcelain, with various patterns painted before firing at high temperatures. Beyond its artistic significance, blue and white porcelain holds rich cultural and historical value, being an integral part of Chinese porcelain culture.

MAKING PROCESS

  • Selecting Materials and Making Clay: Choose high-quality clay, wash, settle, and knead it to make porcelain clay.
  • Shaping: Use handcrafting or a potter's wheel to shape the clay into the desired form and then trim it.
  • Drying: Air-dry the shaped pieces to reduce moisture.
  • First Firing (Bisque Firing): Fire the dried pieces at 800-900°C to harden them.
  • Painting: Hand-paint designs using cobalt-based blue pigment on the bisque-fired pieces.
  • Glazing: Apply a clear glaze evenly over the painted pieces.
  • Second Firing (Glaze Firing): Fire the glazed pieces at 1200-1300°C, causing the glaze and pigment to react and create the signature blue and white patterns.
